English

The Swedish island Gotland is an important strategic site in the Baltic Sea. It played an important role for the commerce in this region up until 1361, when the it was plundered by the Danes. During the Cold War, it served as a strong point in the strategy of defence of Sweden. When the “eternal peace” begins with the liberation of the occupied Baltic States, the government disarmed the defence of Gotland. However, when Russia showed its aggressive intentions with, in particular, its occupation of Crimea, the island again become strategically important. The idea is that Russia could take the island to deploy its air-defence system SA-400 and establish a A2/AD zone (Anti Access / Area Denial) in the Baltic Sea thereby isolating the Baltic States. It’s clear that Gotland could be of great importance in an offensive Russian strategy. However, the SA-400 is not that capable and can’t lock the Baltic Sea.
